What GST Registration is, and who it applies to
Goods and Services Tax replaced the older patchwork of VAT, service tax and excise with a single indirect tax. If your business crosses the turnover threshold — or falls into one of the compulsory categories — registration is not optional, and trading without a GSTIN carries a penalty of 10% of the tax due, subject to a minimum of ₹10,000.
The threshold is ₹40 lakh of annual turnover for suppliers of goods and ₹20 lakh for suppliers of services. In the special category states the limits drop to ₹20 lakh and ₹10 lakh respectively. Those figures are aggregate turnover across all businesses on the same PAN, computed all-India — a detail that trips up a lot of applicants with more than one venture.
A large group must register from the very first rupee regardless of turnover: anyone making inter-state supplies of goods, e-commerce sellers, casual taxable persons, non-resident taxable persons, input service distributors, agents supplying on behalf of others, and anyone liable to pay tax under reverse charge.
Most rejections we see are avoidable — a mismatched address on the electricity bill, a blurred NOC, an unsigned rent agreement, or a principal place of business that does not match the proof uploaded. We check the file against the officer's checklist before it is submitted, which is why our applications clear on the first pass far more often than self-filed ones.
Who needs GST Registration
- Traders and manufacturers with annual turnover above ₹40 lakh
- Service providers with annual turnover above ₹20 lakh
- Any business supplying goods from one state to another, at any turnover
- Sellers on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho or any e-commerce marketplace
- Businesses wanting to claim input tax credit on purchases
- Exporters seeking zero-rated supply benefits or LUT filing
- Anyone required to pay tax under the reverse charge mechanism
- Casual taxable persons — exhibition stalls, seasonal trade, event vendors
Why it matters
Claim input tax credit
Offset the GST you pay on purchases against the GST you collect on sales. Without a GSTIN that money is simply a cost.
Sell on marketplaces
Amazon, Flipkart and every other platform require a valid GSTIN before you can list a single product.
Win larger contracts
Corporate buyers and government tenders will not deal with an unregistered supplier — they lose their own credit.
Trade across state lines
Inter-state supply of goods is legally impossible without registration, whatever your turnover.
Build a credit record
Consistent GST filings are one of the strongest documents a bank looks at when assessing a working-capital loan.
Documents required
Scans on WhatsApp are fine. We check every document against the officer's checklist before filing.

How we do it
- 1
Free eligibility check
We confirm whether you actually need to register, which state you register in, and whether the composition scheme would serve you better.
- 2
Document collection
You send scans on WhatsApp. We review each one against the officer's checklist and flag anything that will draw a query before it is uploaded.
- 3
Application filing
We file REG-01 on the GST portal, complete Aadhaar authentication and generate your ARN — usually the same working day.
- 4
Query handling
If the officer raises a notice in REG-03, we draft and file the REG-04 reply within the deadline. This is included, not billed extra.
- 5
GSTIN issued
Your certificate in REG-06 is issued and we walk you through your first invoice format and filing calendar.
What it costs
We do not publish a rate card, because the right fee depends on your entity type, turnover and how much of the groundwork is already done. Tell us what your business does and we will quote a fixed figure for your case — before you commit to anything.
We quote a fixed professional fee for your case before any work begins, and it excludes GST. Government fees, where applicable, are shown separately and paid directly to the department. Statutory fees and thresholds change by notification — we confirm the current position for your case before you commit.
What non-compliance costs
- Trading without registration when liable: 10% of the tax due, minimum ₹10,000
- Deliberate evasion: penalty equal to 100% of the tax due
- Issuing an invoice without a valid GSTIN can invalidate your customer's input tax credit claim
- Marketplace seller accounts are suspended without an active GSTIN
GST Registration — frequently asked questions
How long does GST registration take?
Your ARN is generated the same day the application is submitted. Where Aadhaar authentication succeeds, the GSTIN is typically issued within 7 working days. If the officer selects the file for physical verification or biometric authentication — which several states now apply — it can take up to 30 days. We track the file daily and respond to any notice within the deadline.
Is there a government fee for GST registration?
No. The government charges nothing for GST registration. Any fee you pay is a professional fee for preparing and filing the application and handling departmental queries. Be cautious of anyone quoting a 'government charge' for this.
Can I register for GST voluntarily if I am below the threshold?
Yes, and it is often worth it. Voluntary registration lets you claim input tax credit, sell on marketplaces and supply to corporate buyers who need the credit. The trade-off is that you must then file returns on time every period, even nil ones, or late fees accrue.
Do I need a commercial office, or will my home address work?
A residential address is perfectly acceptable as your principal place of business. You need an electricity bill or municipal tax receipt in the owner's name, plus a simple No Objection Certificate if the property is not yours. Many proprietorships and freelancers register from home.
What is the difference between the regular and composition schemes?
Under composition, businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore pay a flat low rate — 1% for traders and manufacturers, 5% for restaurants — and file quarterly instead of monthly. The catch is that you cannot claim input tax credit, cannot supply inter-state, and cannot charge GST to your customers. It suits small local B2C businesses; it is usually wrong for B2B.
Do I need a separate GST registration for each state?
Yes. GST is state-specific. If you have a place of business in Gujarat and another in Maharashtra, you need a GSTIN in each. The same PAN is used, with a different state code prefix.
What happens if my application is rejected?
Rejections almost always come from a document mismatch rather than ineligibility, and the officer states the reason. We re-file at no additional professional fee, having fixed the defect. This is included in our fee — it is our job to get it right.
Do I have to file returns even with no sales?
Yes. A nil return is still a return. Missing it attracts a late fee of ₹20 per day for nil filings and ₹50 per day otherwise, and repeated defaults can get your registration cancelled. We offer a filing plan that covers this.
